The Portiforium o Saint Wulstan: Volume 1 (Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, MS. 391) Anselm Hughes Cambridge, Corpus Christi College 391, a Worcester manuscript of the second half of the 11th century, is the earliest surviving example of a `primitive' breviary, that is, a book for the Office containing calendar, psalter, canticles, litany, hymnal, collectar (full lists of incipits of antiphons and hymns) and private prayers; the manuscript quite possibly belonged to Wulstan II, bishop of Worcester 1062-95. Vol. II includes the private prayers (some of which are in Old English), and contains a brief introduction and full indices. |
